THE WORKSHOP
How can we shape our personal narratives in a way that allows others to connect to them?
Our fears and desires overlap. Often the events and experiences that have fundamentally shaped and affected us are poignant to others.
There is a freedom in vulnerability and in exposing one’s fears, especially in a culture of performance and pretense.
How might an artist play forward the hand they’ve been dealt, as subject matter for work, as a way of understanding, and as a means of identifying with others?
During this workshop with Ahndraya Parlato – on show at Spazio Labo’s gallery from May 5th, 2022 with her latest work Who is changed and who is dead –, you will have the chance to go deeper into your projects and ideas through in-class exercises, slide shows and critique: we will discuss strategies for expanding your personal experiences into larger projects and connecting them to the communal and political.
Students who have begun their own personal projects can bring them to discuss about them; however, the workshop is also appropriate for those simply contemplating a personal project or who merely enjoy the topic.
The workshop will be held in English and it will take place at Spazio Labo’, Strada Maggiore 29, Bologna.

WHAT SHOULD I BRING?
Bring your camera, your laptop and your ongoing or completed project (physical or digital versions are both acceptable). However, if you are still contemplating a new personal project, just bring your ideas to be discussed together.

The full fee for the workshop is 200 Euros.

TEACHER
Ahndraya Parlato was born in Kailua, Hawaii. She has a B.A. in photography from Bard College and an MFA from California College of the Arts. Her most recent book, Who Is Changed and Who Is Dead, was published by Mack Books in 2021. Her first monograph, A Spectacle and Nothing Strange was published by Kehrer Verlag in 2016, and her collaboration with Gregory Halpern, East of the Sun, West of the Moon, was published by Études Books in 2014. Ahndraya has been teaching photography for sixteen years and currently teaches at the Rochester Institute of Technology.
